Grade 2 vs Grade 5 titanium fasteners

Grade 2 is commercially pure titanium commonly considered when corrosion resistance, ductility and formability lead the requirement. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is an alloy selected when substantially higher material strength and strength-to-weight performance are needed. Neither grade is automatically better: the correct choice depends on the joint load, environment, geometry, mating materials, installation method and governing specification.

Titanium fasteners for seawater applications

Titanium fasteners are considered for seawater and desalination service because titanium develops a stable, self-repairing oxide film in oxygenated water. Successful use still depends on more than the base material: the project team must evaluate temperature, crevices, flow, galvanic interfaces, hydrogen conditions, mechanical loads, galling control and the governing specification.
